Restoration Projects

TOYX volunteers are constantly working on our railroad equipment to better interpret history and provide the best experience for our visitors. All of our railroad equipment was built between 1938 to 1980, and everything is either restored or under restoration. Below are some of our current and most recently completed restoration projects.

We receive no funding from the City of Port Jervis or other government agencies - all of the funding to support our projects comes from small grants and individual donors. To support our restoration efforts, please consider making a donation to TOYX.


Erie Caboose C262

Coming late 2025

No. C262 is a “Dummore”-style caboose built by the Erie Railroad in March 1946. This historic caboose was used around the Port Jervis area by the Erie and its successor, the Erie Lackawanna, for 30 years. The exterior of the caboose has been sanded and prepped, but an electrical issue with the turntable between June and October 2025 delayed its completion. It will receive a full repaint into its original 1946 Erie paint scheme in late 2025.


Middletown & New Jersey Locomotive 2

Coming late 2025

No. 2 is a 44-ton locomotive built by General Electric in February 1947. Originally used by American Cyanamid, this historic locomotive was acquired by the Middletown & New Jersey Railroad in October 1963. It was based in nearby Middletown, N.Y. and was used throughout Orange County for the next 46 years. The exterior of the locomotive has been sanded and prepped, but an electrical issue with the turntable between June and October 2025 delayed its completion. It will receive a full repaint into its 1960s M&NJ red paint scheme in late 2025.


Conrail Theater Boxcar 368191

Coming early 2026

No. 368191 is an X58-class boxcar built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in October 1965. This car was used to haul bottled beer for 27 years for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and Conrail. In August 1992, it was modified as a one-of-a-kind mobile theater to show railroad safety films. Called the “Safety-On-Rails-Theater” or “S.O.R.T.” boxcar, it was used throughout the northeast over the next seven years and was displayed in Port Jervis several times for special events. The exterior of the boxcar has been sanded and prepped, but an electrical issue with the turntable between June and October 2025 delayed its completion. It will receive a full repaint into its 1990s Conrail paint scheme in early 2026.


TOYX Commissary Car 1701 “Enterprise”

Coming early 2026

No. 1701 was a Union Pacific long-distance coach built by Pullman-Standard in 1950. In 1994, it was acquired by the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus and was reconfigured to become a dormitory for traveling circus staff. Acquired by TOYX in 2017, the interior was rebuilt again to be a commissary support car for TOYX dining car No. 469 and a crew dormitory for TOYX food service staff. The exterior of the car has been sanded and prepped, but an electrical issue with the turntable between June and October 2025 delayed its completion. It will receive a full repaint into TOYX’s standard Erie-inspired passenger car paint scheme in early 2026.


TOYX Baggage Car 1702 “Jack W. Pellington”

Coming early 2026

No. 1702 was a Union Pacific baggage car built by ACF Industries in 1961. In 1995, it was acquired by the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus and was reconfigured to haul elephants, horses, and other circus animals. Acquired by TOYX in 2017, the interior is now one of the primary spaces to collect and warehouse toys for TOYX’s Operation Toy Train initiative. The exterior of the car has been sanded and prepped, but an electrical issue with the turntable between June and October 2025 delayed its completion. It will receive a full repaint into TOYX’s standard Erie-inspired passenger car paint scheme in early 2026.


TOYX Power Car 1700 “Sparky”

Completed June 2025

No. 1700 was a U.S. Army ambulance kitchen car built by the St. Louis Car Company in 1953. Never actually used for military operations, it was rebuilt to a baggage car by Amtrak in 1974. It saw service on passenger trains throughout the country. Acquired by TOYX in 2017, it was rebuilt to a power generator car to provide 480V three-phase power to the rest of TOYX’s passenger car fleet. It underwent a complete mechanical rebuild in the spring of 2025 and was given a full repaint into TOYX’s standard Erie-inspired passenger car paint scheme in early June 2025.


Conrail Caboose 22130

Completed October 2024

No. 22130 is a wide-vision caboose built by the International Car Company in August 1970. Originally used by the Reading Company, this historic caboose was transferred to Conrail on April 1, 1976 and was quickly repainted. It spent the next 23 years in service throughout the northeast, including Port Jervis. Acquired by a private owner and leased to TOYX in September 2024, this car was quickly restored to its authentic 1976 Conrail appearance in October 2024.
